Clutch Reassembly

Tools Needed:  Two M8 X 30mm X1.00 bolts and nuts, wrench for M8 bolts, clutch alignment tool, large blade screwdriver, LocTite, cold punch and hammer.

Lay the engine down so the flywheel is facing up.

I use a block of wood under the front so as not to rest the engine on the cam.

Place the clutch springs in their respective slots.

Hint: Remember to bend the flywheel washer tab up before proceeding.

Install the pressure plate first, dimpled end down...note the slots for the clutch springs.

I put a dot of white paint marking the position of the slots for the clutch springs on the face of the pressure plate...

...I line one of the "dots" up with the middle of a clutch spring...

...and drop the pressure plate in.

Place the first driven plate down...

...so the raised center area is facing...

...UP.

Place the intermediate drive ring on...

...it can go any which way.

Next, put the last driven plate on again with the raised center...

...UP.

Finish with the thrust plate. Set it on so the counter sunk screw holes are facing up.

You're half way home.

Use a clutch alignment tool, in the case URAL crank handle tool #345-316-3...

...to line up the clutch driven plates. Some folks have used a length of broom handle pounded through the splines to make an alignment tool.

Next you'll need the M8 bolts. If fully threaded, you'll need to double nut them just a hair longer than the clutch screws.

Screw them in 180 degrees from each other...

...and tighten them down until the thrust plate is flush with the flywheel.

Grab the clutch screws...new ones are recommended...

...and give each a dab of LocTite before...

...screwing them home.

Remove the two M8 bolts...

...and put the last two clutch screws in.

Using the punch and hammer, drive some thrust plate material...

...into the slot of the clutch screw..

...on both sides.

My technique for doing this is...make a vertical punch close the screw slot...

...this gives you something to grab.

Place the punch at approximately 45 degrees in the same punch hole and strike  the punch again...

...pushing a small amount of material into the slot. Do this on both sides of each clutch screw.

Ready to mount the gear box.

Note: If performing clutch installation with motor in the engine. Liberally apply RTV sealant to the clutch springs and let it set for 30 minutes. Then install the springs on flywheel. The tacky RTV will hold springs in place during assembly.
